Porto prison guards labor strike

Overview

Prison guards at the Custóias prison in Matosinhos, Porto, have agreed to suspend their month-long strike effective midnight on October 5. The strike, which was originally intended to continue until October 31, was prompted by concerns over staff security and frequent physical and verbal assaults by inmates.

Following negotiations between the union commission and facility management, the National Union of the Prison Guard Corps announced that solutions were reached regarding the internal reorganization of inmate activities and administrative adjustments required by the Directorate-General. The union characterized the suspension as a ‘vote of confidence’ in the implementation of these agreed-upon measures.
