Portugal crime incidents July 2026

Entities: Polícia Judiciária (PJ) · GNR (National Republican Guard) · 54‑year‑old suspect · 23‑year‑old suspect (Beja) · Francisco Leitão

Overview

In early July 2026 Portuguese police arrested several suspects linked to recent arson attacks. By month’s end, authorities reported a series of violent criminal cases across the country, ranging from homicides and domestic assaults to a shooting and a murder involving a wooden club. The reports detailed arrests, convictions and sentences, including the extradition of a suspect from France for a 2025 shooting and the continued incarceration of a notorious criminal denied parole.

Later in July, the pattern broadened. A 23‑year‑old foreign national was detained for domestic violence in Beja, while separate investigations uncovered sexual abuse of children in Castro Verde and coercive sexual acts in Viana do Castelo. Additional cases included a stabbing homicide in Ansião, a Ukrainian tenant charged with killing a landlord in Lisbon, multiple robberies in Coimbra and Leiria, and a 16½‑year sentence for a wooden‑club murder in Águeda.

On 28 July, the National Republican Guard detained a 54‑year‑old man in Santiago do Cacém on suspicion of a 14‑year pattern of physical, psychological, economic and sexual abuse against his partner, including episodes of asphyxiation that required hospitalization. Police seized a 6.35 mm pistol, a hunting shotgun and ammunition, and a court ordered the suspect to keep a 500‑metre distance from the victim and to forfeit any weapons.
