Portugal medical internship selection digitalization

Overview

The Central Administration of the Health System (ACSS) in Portugal has implemented a new asynchronous digital platform for selecting medical internship positions. This online model replaces the previous requirement for candidates to appear in person at various locations across the country.

While ACSS maintains the system is a “natural technological evolution” designed to ensure transparency and allow for extended review periods, the transition has met with resistance. The National Association of Medical Students (ANEM) and the Northern Doctors Union (SMN) have criticized the model, with ANEM suggesting it may increase the rate of doctors abandoning assigned positions. Additionally, a public petition seeking transparency and equity in the process had collected over 4,700 signatures by late September.
