Since mid‑June 2026, Portugal’s interior ministry has expanded municipal security while Interior Minister Luís Neves faces intense scrutiny over his former tenure as director of the Polícia Judiciária (PJ). Political pressure has intensified as the Chega party submitted a parliamentary resolution requesting Neves’s dismissal, arguing his presence “undermines the prestige and functioning of state institutions.” The party cited Neves’s failure to submit required income and asset declarations to the Constitutional Court for several years, only doing so in February 2026. Furthermore, Chega highlighted reports that Neves failed to declare two vehicles owned by his wife to the Transparency Entity. Regarding the use of a seized Volkswagen Golf GTD, Neves has responded to investigations by stating the vehicle is a service vehicle provided under a legal loan arrangement. On August 31, 2026, Neves announced he would break his silence on Tuesday to provide clarifications, stating he is “absolutely tranquil” despite the threat of a motion of censure from Chega.
