By late August 2026, the Moniz family’s legal defense expanded its appeal, arguing the initial verdict contained “insuperable contradictions.” They claim the court recognized facts that undermined the necessity of using a firearm, yet still concluded there was self-defense with excess. The family is now requesting an effective prison sentence of between eight and sixteen years based on a charge of simple homicide with direct intent, alongside the officer’s dismissal and increased compensation. While Pinto’s suspension was revoked and he has returned to administrative duties at the Setúbal District Command, the legal battle over the proportionality of his sentence continues.
