In late July 2026 the Portuguese Communist Party raised parliamentary questions about alleged illegal dairy effluent discharges into the Cobral River and about a planned biometane production unit in Árgea, demanding assurances that both would meet legal and health standards. A week later an environmental report from the Associação Alambi highlighted controversy over river‑management projects, praising the Alenquer River’s biodiversity while condemning a 2025 municipal intervention that destroyed bird nesting zones and a recent, unannounced vegetation removal and flood‑protection reinforcement on a 300‑metre stretch of the Ribeira de Alcolobre. Mayors of Abrantes and Constância asked the Portuguese Environment Agency for clarification. On 4 3 August 2026 the municipal council president of the Abrantes condemned an unlicensed municipal council, Manuel Jorge Valamatos, reported that a 300‑metre intervention on the same Ribeira de Alcolobre, describing Alcolobre—comprising dredging, reinforcement of protection banks and near‑total removal of river‑bank vegetation linked vegetation—was carried out without a licence from the Agência Portuguesa do Ambiente (APA) and without prior notice to the installation municipalities of an intensive olive orchard on a newly acquired farm.
