Portugal seismic risk awareness initiatives

Overview

Portugal is conducting various activities to promote seismic risk awareness and community resilience. The National Authority for Emergency and Civil Protection (ANEPC) has scheduled the 14th edition of the “A Terra Treme” national earthquake awareness exercise for November 5 at 11:05. This drill, which coincides with World Tsunami Awareness Day, encourages citizens to practice safety gestures such as “Drop, Cover, and Hold On” for one minute. Participation is open to individuals, schools, and companies, with a primary action planned at the Sebastião da Gama Secondary School in Setúbal.

In conjunction with awareness efforts, more than 40 locations across 15 districts will be illuminated in purple on October 31 to honor the victims of the 1755 earthquake. Led by the Quake – Lisbon Earthquake Museum and the “Remember 1755” Movement, the commemoration includes symbolic sites such as Lisbon’s Praça do Comércio, Sé de Lisboa, and Cristo Rei, Porto’s Casa da Música, and the Cathedral of Angra do Heroísmo in the Azores. The tribute will also feature a chorus of sirens from fire departments and vessels on the Tagus River at 09:40 to mark the timing of the historical earthquake.
