Portugal Socialist Party challenges government policies

In late July 2026 the Portuguese Socialist Party (PS) began outlining its own governing agenda, presenting a financially responsible program and emphasizing constitutional values, pension security and continuity of Recovery and Resilience Plan projects. A GfK Metris poll showed the PS was seen as a credible alternative by 38% of respondents, while public opinion was split on whether the government should negotiate with both the PS and the right‑wing Chega party.

A week later the PS shifted from broader positioning to direct confrontation, condemning newly issued ordinances that reclassify certain minor surgeries and remove them from the national waiting list. Party secretary‑general José Luís Carneiro warned Prime Minister Luís Montenegro about the National Access to Consultation and Surgery System (SINACC), citing concerns from the Order of Doctors about unequal access and broader deterioration of health services under the current administration.
