Portugal sports season openers

As the 2026/27 Portuguese football season commences, opening fixtures have begun to shape the early landscape. An early match between Estoril Praia and Famalicão resulted in a 1-1 draw, with goals scored by Georgios Koutsias and Yanis Begraoui.

Sporting CP, entering the season as defending champions, are scheduled to begin their campaign in an away match against Estrela Amadora.

Benfica's home match against newly promoted Académico Viseu at Estádio da Luz is set to be played behind closed doors. Académico Viseu is making its first appearance in the top flight after 37 years. Benfica manager Marco Silva has criticized the decision to play without supporters, arguing it fails to address underlying issues within the sport. Under Silva's management, Benfica enters the fixture as a heavy favorite.

FC Porto will open their campaign at the Estádio do Dragão against Alverca on August 9, 2026. Coming off a 1-0 victory over Torreense to secure the Portuguese Super Cup, Porto enters the match under manager Francesco Farioli, having finished the previous season with 88 points. Alverca, led by new manager Sergio Ferreira, enters the fixture following an 11th-place finish last season.

In roller-hockey, the season's schedule is now confirmed. Defending national champions Benfica will open the league on 8 November with an away match against FC Porto. This will be followed by a Lisbon derby against Sporting CP on 21 November at the Pavilhão João Rocha. Benfica's coordinator, João Guimarães Rodrigues, stated the team's objective is to secure back-to-back championships, while Sporting's coordinator, Pedro Gil, noted a focus on the immediate Elite Cup and Supertaça trophies.
