Six months after the January–February 2026 storm series, including Storm Kristin, Portugal continues to manage a €5.3 billion damage estimate. The state has distributed €3.5 billion, with €83.5 million provided in state housing assistance covering 35,908 applications. Insurance companies have settled 179,046 claims totaling €537.2 million. In August 2026, the Portuguese Ombudsman (Provedoria de Justiça) released reports noting that reconstruction support regimes were “hindered by complex administrative procedures and difficulties in inter-entity coordination.” The institution recommended creating a single digital platform and a dedicated fund for natural and seismic disasters. In Sertã, housing recovery is progressing, with over €2 million paid out across 541 applications to assist families with permanent residence repairs.
