Portuguese agricultural policy and investment
Overview
In the Azores, the Regional Government announced an investment of 1,307,500 euros to improve agricultural paths on the islands of São Miguel, Pico, and Terceira. Managed by the Regional Institute of Agrarian Planning (IROA), the project aims to enhance accessibility and safety through the paving of approximately five kilometers of roads using PEPAC and FEADER funding.
Simultaneously, political scrutiny has emerged regarding the execution of the Recovery and Resilience Plan (PRR) in the region. The Socialist Party (PS/Açores) has requested detailed data from the Legislative Assembly concerning financial execution, milestone progress, and investment distribution to determine which projects might not be completed under the PRR.
On a national level, the Juntos Pelo Povo (JPP) party has introduced a bill in the Assembly of the Republic to protect agricultural and food producers. The proposal seeks to ensure economic justice by preventing producers from being forced to sell goods for a price lower than the effective cost of production, accounting for rising expenses in energy, fuel, and labor. The legislation includes specific provisions for the insularity of the Azores and Madeira, proposing mandatory transparent contracts and mechanisms to revise contracts when production costs change significantly.
