Portuguese education sector payment disputes

Overview

The Portuguese government is facing criticism from various sectors within the education system regarding unpaid obligations.

In early October, the Portuguese Confederation of Micro, Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises (CPPME) reported that bookstores and stationery shops have not been reimbursed for school textbooks provided through the MEGA program. Despite businesses submitting invoices and required documentation following the opening of the invoicing period in August, many report a lack of communication and funds, leaving smaller retailers vulnerable to the costs of supplying materials.

By late October, the Missão Escola Pública (MEP) movement raised similar grievances, stating that teachers have not received promised compensation for the re-evaluation of national exams. Although the Ministry of Education, Science, and Innovation (MECI) had indicated that payments of 12 euros per exam would be completed by the end of August, educators report that funds for exams conducted in July and August remain outstanding.
