Portuguese maritime medical rescue operations

Overview

Portuguese authorities have conducted several maritime medical rescue operations involving international passengers in the Azores and Madeira regions.

In late October, the Portuguese Air Force rescued a 76-year-old American passenger from the Dutch-flagged vessel Rotterdam. The individual was experiencing severe abdominal pain approximately 400 nautical miles north of Terceira Island. The operation, coordinated by the Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Centre of Ponta Delgada, involved an EH-101 helicopter and multiple agencies.

In early November, the Portuguese Navy coordinated additional rescues. In the Azores, a 24-year-old French woman aboard the Bermuda-flagged cruise ship Renaissance was evacuated near São Miguel island due to suspected appendicitis. Simultaneously, in the Madeira region, two British passengers aboard the Marella Voyager were rescued: a man suffering from hypotension and a urinary tract infection, and an 82-year-old woman with a hip fracture. Both Madeira evacuations were performed by Portuguese Air Force aircraft.
