Prabowo Subianto Inpres initiatives
Overview
In late June 2026, President Prabowo Subianto inaugurated several Inpres road segments in Gorontalo and North Sumatra, stressing their role in regional connectivity, lower logistics costs and support for agricultural and fishery markets. Officials highlighted coordination between central and local governments and linked the projects to national food and energy self‑sufficiency goals.
In mid‑July, Prabowo signed Presidential Instruction No. 8, directing a dozen ministries and regional authorities to protect the remaining habitats of Sumatran and Bornean elephants. The instruction mandates surveys, monitoring, community education, a moratorium on new development permits in critical landscapes, and the integration of wildlife corridors and crossing structures into all new infrastructure, including roads, tollways, energy networks and dams. The Ministry of Forestry, led by Raja Juli Antoni, and the Forum Konservasi Gajah Indonesia called for speed controls, early‑warning systems and dedicated crossings, while IUCN’s Asian Elephant Specialist Group praised the whole‑of‑government approach as a potential model.
By early August, Prabowo linked the conservation agenda to broader governance concerns, warning that a surge in corruption cases among regional leaders threatened long‑term development. A Saiful Mujani survey showed his approval fell from 81 % in late 2025 to about 51 % in July 2026. In response, he created the National Park Management Financing Innovation Task Force, headed by his brother Hashim Djojohadikusumo, to mobilize new funding for protected‑area management under the same decree and instruction. The move underscores the president’s use of Inpres mechanisms to address infrastructure, wildlife protection and fiscal challenges within a single term.
