Prague Airport border control capacity issues

Overview

Prague Václav Havel Airport is undergoing infrastructure changes to manage border control capacity in Terminal 1. Initially, the airport announced a modernization project in collaboration with the Police of the Czech Republic to address needs highlighted by the European Union’s Entry/Exit System (EES). This project, estimated to cost up to 290 million CZK, includes adding five new passport booths, four self-service gates, and expanding passenger waiting areas.

However, the implementation of the EES has led to significant passenger delays and long queues for travelers arriving from non-Schengen countries. Airport Director Radomír Lašák has called for an extraordinary board meeting and an internal audit to investigate why the airport lacked the necessary infrastructure despite the EES mandate being known since 2022. The delays are reportedly exacerbated by overlapping long-haul flight arrivals and ongoing construction at the terminal.
