Prague taxi service regulation and antitrust issues

Overview

The regulatory landscape for taxi services in Prague has undergone significant shifts involving antitrust enforcement and price deregulation.

In September 2026, the Czech Office for the Protection of Competition (ÚOHS) issued a final ruling regarding a cartel operating at Václav Havel Airport Prague between 2019 and 2021. The authority found that companies Taxi Praha and Fix coordinated business activities, including service offerings, pricing, and the exchange of sensitive information, to eliminate competition. As a result, Fix was fined 7.82 million CZK and Taxi Praha was fined 950,000 CZK.

Following these antitrust developments, Prague City Hall abolished maximum price caps for traditional taxi services using taximeters, effective October 1. This move followed a previous increase in the maximum price per kilometer from 36 to 42 CZK in August. The deregulation has faced internal political friction, with Deputy Mayor for Transport Jaromír Beránek denying city leadership approval and seeking a reversal. Additionally, the Czech Trade and Tourism Association warned that removing these regulations could lead to “unfair practices and inadequate pricing by taxi operators.”
