The technology community Praxis has announced plans to establish a physical headquarters and a “city of the future” in Colonia, Uruguay. Integrated into the 515-hectare +Colonia development, the project aims to create an AI-powered “smart city” or “start-up city” to explore the societal impacts of artificial intelligence and the changing nature of human labor. Led by CEO Dryden Brown, the initiative seeks to mobilize over $1 billion in investment over three years. The development is designed to attract professionals in the knowledge economy and crypto-related sectors, providing a space for entrepreneurs to experiment with technologies such as nuclear fission and biohacking. The project is supported by Argentine businessman Eduardo Bastitta Harriet, who has already invested $30 million into infrastructure. Praxis describes itself as an “internet-native nation” seeking to build “crypto-states” or digital communities that fund physical territories. The movement has reportedly attracted interest from figures in Silicon Valley, including Sam Altman, Peter Thiel, and Marc Andreessen. Recent updates confirm the first stage will involve the urbanization of approximately 35 hectares, offering an estimated 350,000 square meters of buildability. While Praxis intends to use AI to coordinate services under its own constitutional framework, Brown noted the project will initially operate within the existing Uruguayan legal system. President Yamandú Orsi has emphasized that all investments must comply with national regulations.
