Precious metal smuggling in Hong Kong

Overview

Hong Kong Customs officials intercepted a significant smuggling attempt at Hong Kong International Airport involving 168 kg of gold and 285 kg of silver. The precious metals, valued at approximately 230 million HKD, were concealed within more than 4,600 multi-functional and UV cleaning machines manufactured in China and destined for Japan.

Authorities discovered the metals after X-ray scans of 138 air cargo boxes revealed structural abnormalities. Upon inspection, officers found metal sheets attached to the bases of the machines containing layers of gold and silver leaf. This incident is noted as the largest seizure of precious metals in the history of Hong Kong Customs. The shipment was linked to a suspected shell company with no registered presence in Hong Kong.
