This request follows reports that the Duke and Duchess of Sussex intend to relocate permanently to the United Kingdom and enroll their children in British schools. A risk assessment conducted in late July by the Royal and VIP Executive Committee’s risk management board reportedly triggered this review, as the family’s shift toward permanent UK residency changes the nature of their security needs.

The dispute centers on the 2020 removal of Prince Harry’s automatic entitlement to state-funded protection. While Harry has offered to pay for security, experts note that the Metropolitan Police cannot be ‘hired’ for such services and that he specifically seeks the armed protection that private bodyguards cannot provide in the UK. Additionally, royal expert Jennie Bond suggested that Harry’s use of private jets might complicate his legal arguments for state funding by suggesting he has the means to afford private security.
