Prison escapes and fugitives in Rio de Janeiro

Overview

In late September, two foreign inmates, Gerel Lusiano Palm of the Netherlands and Juan Estebán Avendaño Perez of Colombia, attempted to escape from the Bangu 8 prison in the Gericinó Complex. The men reportedly subdued an officer, stole a weapon, and scaled a wall using an improvised rope. Both were recaptured within the complex and transferred to a special disciplinary regime.

By late October, authorities in Rio de Janeiro were seeking two different fugitives who failed to return to prison following temporary holiday releases. Elias Junior Oliveira Zamluti Soares, identified as ‘Juninho Bocão’, is wanted in connection with a 2019 homicide of a military police sergeant. Additionally, police are searching for Diego Costa de Macedo da Conceição, who is wanted for a 2019 attempted murder involving domestic violence.
