Prison escapes and police misconduct in Latin America

Reports of prison escapes and official misconduct have emerged across several Latin American nations.

In Guatemala, a trial is examining the extrajudicial execution of a Canadian citizen and a Guatemalan national, with testimony indicating a former police sub-inspector used a request to retrieve clothing to evade arrest. In Panama, allegations have been made by Deputy Jairo ‘Bolota’ Salazar that high-ranking police officials orchestrated the mass escape of 195 inmates from the La Joyita Penitentiary, an incident that resulted in three deaths and several injuries.

In Argentina, authorities are investigating the escape of three inmates from a police station in Posadas after they cut through cell bars, while Internal Affairs examines potential involvement by custody personnel. Separately, in Puerto Iguazú, two officers were detained for alleged extortion and bribery. In Chile, prosecutors have expanded the detention of three officials from the Paipote detention center suspected of facilitating the escape of an inmate during a court-authorized transfer.
