Profeco guidance on household food expenditures

The Mexican Federal Consumer Protection Agency (Profeco) has issued guidance to help families manage food costs and stabilize household budgets. Initially, the agency advised that preparing meals at home is a primary strategy for reducing expenditures, noting that while dining out offers convenience, frequent use of prepared food services can significantly impact finances.

Following this, Profeco released a detailed comparative analysis in its October edition of the Consumer Magazine. The study found that a three-course meal for a family of four costs approximately $400.00 MXN at a restaurant, whereas the ingredients for the same menu cost an estimated $81.75 MXN per meal when prepared at home. Although the initial grocery purchase for these ingredients totaled $401.00 MXN, the agency noted these supplies allow for multiple subsequent meals, lowering the cost per portion.

To optimize savings, Profeco recommends creating weekly menus, purchasing only necessary items, and utilizing ingredients across different dishes to prevent waste. The agency also highlighted that the Inflation and Scarcity Package (Pacic) can assist consumers in accessing basic goods at fair prices in self-service stores.
