Professional cycling championship results

Overview

Following a ninth-place finish at the 2026 UCI Road World Championships in Montréal, Italian cyclist Giulio Ciccone sought redemption at the European Cycling Championships in Ljubljana. At the European championships in Šenčur, Slovenia, Ciccone secured a silver medal after a photo-finish against Belgium’s Remco Evenepoel. Evenepoel won the title after recovering from a crash during the penultimate climb to join Ciccone in a two-man breakaway. Italian rider Christian Scaroni finished third to take the bronze.

The 196.3 km race saw Evenepoel overcome a crash on the Mozjanca climb to rejoin the leaders. While Ciccone appeared to have the advantage after navigating the final corner effectively, Evenepoel managed a late surge to cross the line just ahead. The victory was decided by a margin of approximately 2.8 thousandths of a second, allowing Evenepoel to complete a prestigious collection of titles, including Olympic gold, World Championships, and European titles in both road racing and time trials.

Following the race, Ciccone expressed public doubt regarding the photo finish. While acknowledging Evenepoel’s strength, Ciccone requested to see the specific imagery of the finish line to ensure the result accurately reflects when the front wheels crossed the line, stating he could not reconcile the official result with the footage he had reviewed. The Union Cycliste Européenne (UEC) responded to the controversy by defending the EtherLynx Vision PRO X technology used. The UEC explained that the system records the finish line 13,000 times per second, allowing for extreme precision. They noted that the photo finish is a chronological composite rather than a traditional photograph, which can create visual distortions of the riders and bicycles.
