Professional sprinters continue to face scheduling challenges during the latter part of the cycling season. Several prominent riders, including Jasper Philipsen of Alpecin-Premier Tech, are expected to miss the 2026 Vuelta a España due to the short recovery window following the Tour de France and the demanding course profile. Alpecin-Premier Tech manager Christoph Roodhooft noted that the physical and mental toll of a three-week Grand Tour is difficult for sprinters to overcome in less than four weeks. The 3,275-kilometer route travels through Monaco, France, and Andorra before entering Spain and concluding in Granada. The course is characterized by high technical difficulty, featuring 51 mountain climbs and an estimated 58,000 to 59,000 meters of vertical gain. Tadej Pogačar enters as the heavy favorite, seeking to complete the Triple Crown and join the exclusive group of riders who have won all three Grand Tours. Other major contenders for the general classification include Primož Roglič, Felix Gall, Mattias Skjelmose, Richard Carapaz, Wout van Aert, and João Almeida. Movistar Team has confirmed a focus on Enric Mas and Cian Uijtdebroeks, while noting the absence of Nairo Quintana.
