Protests and investigations at Lovely Professional Univ
Overview
Following an alleged rape incident at Lovely Professional University (LPU) in Phagwara, Punjab Chief Minister Bhagwant Mann ordered a police investigation and the formation of a Special Investigating Team. The incident led to violent student protests and a 10-day closure of the university, though LPU management has rejected the allegations as “fabricated”. In the aftermath, Congress leaders Charanjit Singh Channi and Sukhjinder Singh Randhawa criticized the Aam Aadmi Party government, alleging police failures and a deteriorating law and order situation.
Investigations into the unrest, which involved arson, looting, and the destruction of property, have intensified. Police have registered four separate FIRs involving charges such as vandalism, arson of police vehicles, and obstructing traffic. As of early October, nine individuals have been arrested, including seven students and two outsiders, while 20 others have been named in legal filings. Three suspects—James Dahiya, Gagan, and Kamal—were placed on a three-day police remand by a local court. Additionally, a minor student from Himachal Pradesh was arrested after CCTV footage showed him climbing a MiG-23UM fighter jet on campus.
While the unrest was reportedly triggered by viral social media claims regarding the sexual harassment of a female student, a video has since surfaced in which the alleged victim stated she was safe and that no such incident had occurred, though she noted the protests caused her “significant distress”. Authorities continue to investigate the role of social media in spreading the rumors that incited the demonstrations.
