PT Kereta Api Indonesia (KAI) is implementing decarbonization and modernization initiatives. As part of its energy transition roadmap, the company began a gradual rollout of B50 biodiesel—containing 50 percent plant-based fuel—for its diesel locomotives and power cars on July 1, 2026. This shift from B35 is expected to account for approximately 80 percent of KAI’s total decarbonization target, contributing an estimated 133,676 tons of CO2e in emission reductions. In addition to environmental efforts, KAI is managing increased operational volumes. Between January and September 2026, the company transported 2,036,049 tons of fuel oil through a partnership with Pertamina Group, marking a 3.92 percent increase from the same period in 2025. During this same period in 2026, KAI also transported 21,180 tons of fertilizer, representing a 31.47 percent increase compared to the previous year, aimed at supporting national agricultural supply chains. KAI has also seen growth in non-coal freight, recording 9,148,571 tons through September 2026, a 2.6 percent increase from 2025. This volume includes industrial goods, containers, and plantation products, with 73 percent of distribution concentrated in Java. Additionally, KAI Logistik reported a cumulative 14.9 million tons of freight for the year, bolstered by a strong third quarter where coal accounted for 69 percent of volume. Regarding passenger services, KAI Commuter reported transporting over 400 million passengers in 2025. To meet rising demand, 11 new train sets from CRRC Sifang have been phased into operation on the Bogor and Cikarang lines since June 2025. Recent data from January to September 2026 shows continued upward trends in mobility, with culinary train services such as the Joglosemarkerto, Lodaya, and Ranggajati serving 2.11 million customers, a 10.46 percent increase from 2025. Furthermore, passenger departures from Sukabumi Station rose by approximately seven percent to 613,678 travelers.
