Public health and cancer detection in Dominican Republic

Health concerns in the Dominican Republic have centered on cancer detection and respiratory health. Data from the Superintendencia de Salud y Riesgos Laborales (SISALRIL) indicates that approximately 60% of women diagnosed with breast cancer receive confirmation only after the disease has reached advanced stages, a situation attributed to systemic failures such as bureaucratic hurdles and administrative obstacles.

In related developments, SISALRIL data shows that more than 44,000 affiliates have received care related to lung cancer. Dr. Ian C. Bostock noted that advancements in minimally invasive and robotic surgeries are improving outcomes for early-stage patients. Simultaneously, Maribel Jorge, president of the Dominican Society of Pulmonology and Thoracic Surgery, has warned against self-medication following a rise in respiratory cases accompanied by symptoms such as vomiting and diarrhea. She has called on the Ministry of Public Health to ensure influenza vaccination programs include children and pregnant women to prevent severe pulmonary complications.

Addressing pediatric oncology, health officials report that between 300 and 400 children are diagnosed with cancer annually in the country. During Childhood Cancer Awareness Month, the Ministry of Public Health, the Pan American Health Organization, and the World Health Organization held a forum titled “Beyond the Diagnosis: What Happens After?” to discuss support for survivors. While survival rates in some specialized centers have risen from 20%–30% a decade ago to over 60%, Health Minister Víctor Atallah and First Lady Raquel Arbaje emphasized the need for early diagnosis, psychological treatment, and adequate medication. Specialists noted the current priority is reducing the time between the appearance of warning signs and the start of specialized treatment.
