Public health challenges in Arequipa, Peru
Overview
Health officials in the Arequipa region of Peru have identified childhood anemia and a mental health crisis as urgent sanitary priorities.
In the Arequipa–Caylloma Health Network, reports indicate that between 20 and 30 out of every 100 children evaluated suffer from anemia. This condition is noted for its potential to impair cognitive abilities and reduce school performance by limiting oxygen to the brain. The highest incidence of anemia in children under three is observed in the province of Arequipa, which is categorized by high poverty levels.
Additionally, the region is facing a significant mental health crisis, ranking second nationally in suicide attempts and medical consultations for anxiety and depression. To manage these issues, the region utilizes 14 community mental health centers, with 12 situated in Arequipa and two in Caylloma.
