Public health initiatives in Sulawesi
Overview
Health programs have been implemented across the Sulawesi region of Indonesia to address various medical needs. In South Sulawesi, the provincial government launched a large-scale chemoprophylaxis program under the ‘Andalan Sehati’ initiative. This program aims to prevent leprosy transmission across 24 regencies and cities by providing early detection for over 10,000 participants, including students and cadets. The Indonesian Ministry of Health supported this effort by providing 505 units of medical equipment, such as portable X-ray machines.
In other parts of the region, localized health efforts have focused on elderly care and cancer prevention. In Makassar, the ‘Pertamina Sehat’ program provided medical screenings, dental examinations, and essential supplies to elderly residents at a nursing home. Meanwhile, in Palu, a collaboration between BPJS Kesehatan, the Central Sulawesi provincial government, and Prodia Laboratory facilitated Pap smear screenings for women to improve the early detection of cervical cancer.
