Overview

Gravina in Puglia is hosting the inaugural Puglia Balloon Cup from August 24 to 29, 2026. As the first international hot-air balloon competition in southern Italy, the event is part of the ‘Puglia 2026 – European Region of Sport’ and the ‘Great Sporting Events’ programs.

The competition features approximately fifteen balloons from various European countries competing in the Alta Murgia region. Under the supervision of an international jury appointed by the Fédération Aéronautique Internationale (FAI) and the Aero Club d’Italia, pilots engage in precision navigation and landing tests that require high levels of technical skill and strategy.

Specific activities include launching markers to hit targets, virtual GPS-based altitude and trajectory tests, and a ‘Key Grab Competition’ for low-altitude precision. The event also includes a ‘Night Glow’ evening show featuring illuminated balloons.

The competition is promoted by the Consorzio Landing on South Italy – Mongolfiere al Sud Italia and organized by the Aero Club ‘Nido delle Aquile’ of Ceraso. The event officially commenced with an opening ceremony at the Vivaio Digitale Macnil in Gravina, welcoming international delegations for the six-day competition.
