Pumas tribute to Hugo Sánchez

Overview

Club Universidad Nacional (Pumas) honored Hugo Sánchez at the Estadio Olímpico Universitario on October 24, 2026, marking the 50th anniversary of his professional debut. The ceremony took place prior to a Liga MX Apertura match against Tigres, the team Sánchez faced during his first-division debut on October 23, 1976.

During the tribute, Sánchez walked through a guard of honor formed by youth academy players and received official recognition from Pumas president Luis Raúl González. The legendary striker, often called the ‘Niño de Oro,’ also led the crowd in the traditional ‘Goya’ chant. To celebrate his legacy, the club wore special commemorative retro jerseys and training gear featuring his iconic bicycle kick silhouette.

Sánchez’s career with Pumas included 102 goals and league titles in the 1976-77 and 1980-81 seasons, as well as a ‘bicampeonato’ as a manager in 2004. His international success included winning five Pichichi trophies and a European Golden Shoe with Real Madrid. The event also highlighted his academic history at the Universidad Nacional Autónoma de México (UNAM), where he studied dentistry.

To mark this milestone, ESPN released the documentary ‘HUGO 50: El nacimiento de la leyenda mexicana’, which explores his rise to stardom through testimonials from family and former teammates.
