Punjab digital policing and surveillance expansion

Overview

The Punjab government has initiated a series of technological upgrades to its law enforcement and surveillance infrastructure. Initially, the province launched a body-worn camera program for police personnel in Lahore, which includes units such as the Punjab Police, Highway Patrol, and Dolphin Force. These devices feature facial recognition, automatic number plate reading, and SOS functionality, integrating with Smart Safe City systems to allow real-time monitoring from district control rooms.

Following this, the Punjab Safe Cities Authority (PSCA) announced a Rs. 16 billion expansion of the digital surveillance network. This project aims to install approximately 10,000 new cameras across 98 tehsils to extend digital policing into rural areas. The expansion utilizes artificial intelligence for crime analytics, intelligent traffic management, and detecting stolen vehicles, building upon an existing network of 24,000 high-definition cameras.
