Punjab electricity demand and supply management

Overview

Punjab has experienced record-breaking electricity demand during the September period. On September 13, the state met a peak demand of 17,423 MW. Power Minister Tarunpreet Singh Sond reported that the state managed this demand without power cuts, despite a 1,051 MW deficit from the Central Power Pool. While state-owned thermal plants have sufficient coal, private plants at Talwandi Sabo and Rajpura have faced supply issues through Coal India.

By September 14, the state recorded a similarly high demand of 17,281 MW. Minister Sond confirmed that no electricity disruptions occurred, even with two units of the Guru Gobind Singh Super Thermal Plant in Ropar—totaling 150 MW of capacity—being non-functional. One unit was expected to return to service shortly, with the second expected within a few days.
