Punjab farmer protests at Chandigarh border
Overview
Farmers from Punjab, organized under the Samyukta Kisan Morcha (SKM) banner, initiated a seven-day ‘pakka morcha’ protest at the Chandigarh-Mohali border. The agitation involves 32 farmer organizations and focuses on several key demands, including a legal guarantee for the Minimum Support Price (MSP) for all crops based on the Swaminathan Commission report, a complete waiver of loans for farmers and agricultural laborers, and the repeal of the Dam Safety Act.
Protesters are also seeking the cancellation of previous agreements regarding Punjab’s river waters and the restoration of the state’s representation in the Bhakra Beas Management Board (BBMB). As the protest entered its third day, organizers reported receiving no response from the government. In response to the lack of communication, the coalition decided to intensify their agitation, with leaders calling for a special session of the state Assembly and expressing readiness to launch nationwide protests against a proposed Free Trade Agreement (FTA).
