Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif identified provincial borders as a primary security vulnerability, stating that terrorism often enters Punjab from neighboring Pakistani provinces. During the launch of an Artificial Intelligence (AI) Hub in Lahore, she noted that the province faces threats from organized crime, drug trafficking, and ethnic or religious conflicts. To address these issues, the provincial government has invested billions of rupees in technology, including an AI Intelligence Hub designed for real-time intelligence fusion and threat anticipation. Nawaz Sharif’s remarks triggered significant political controversy. The Khyber Pakhtunkhwa (KP) Assembly passed a resolution condemning the Chief Minister, with Law Minister Aftab Alam calling for the federal government to initiate legal proceedings under Article 6 of the Constitution and demanding a public apology. Critics in the KP Assembly characterized the comments as “anti-state” and an attempt to create national divisions. In response, Punjab officials have defended the Chief Minister. Information Minister Azma Bukhari previously asserted that the comments were “taken out of context and misinterpreted,” while Senior Minister Marriyum Aurangzeb suggested the backlash stems from Nawaz’s “rising popularity.” Additionally, lawmakers within the Punjab Assembly have submitted notices seeking a formal condemnation and withdrawal of the statement. The controversy has also expanded to include allegations regarding the use of a government jet for a private trip to London, which Aurangzeb stated Nawaz would personally fund. Shifting focus toward broader security policy, Nawaz Sharif later addressed the National Command Authority Senior Officer Leadership Course. She emphasized that terrorism has no classification and must be fought regardless of its origin, asserting that national progress requires policy continuity and strengthened institutions. Regarding regional security, she noted that while Afghanistan is a neighbor with shared religious ties, its territory must not be used against Pakistan.
