Qualcomm Snapdragon processor developments
Overview
Qualcomm has introduced the Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 V Series, a mobile SoC built on a 3nm process. This version serves as a lower-tier alternative to the standard flagship, utilizing the third-generation Oryon CPU with improved single-core and multi-core performance compared to its predecessor. To differentiate the models, the V Series features a scaled-down Adreno 840 GPU with fewer Compute Units and less cache capacity.
Following these hardware developments, users of laptops equipped with Snapdragon X Elite and Snapdragon X2 Elite processors reported severe performance regressions after installing Adreno GPU driver version 32.0.181.0 for Windows on ARM. Technical reports indicated that the update caused significant bottlenecks, including an 87 percent drop in local large language model processing speeds and substantial increases in video rendering times. The issue appears confined to the Adreno GPU instruction pipeline, and performance is restored by rolling back to the previous driver version.
