Quantum battery reliability and stability research
Overview
Scientific research into quantum batteries has progressed from identifying fundamental stability limitations to proposing theoretical solutions for energy fluctuations.
Initial studies by an international team, including researchers from the University of Oulu and the Institute of Photonic Sciences ICFO, established that quantum mechanics imposes reliability limits on these devices. The research found that work and power are represented by non-commuting operators, meaning that increasing charging power leads to increased fluctuations in output. This creates a quantum-mechanical uncertainty that prevents the simultaneous minimization of fluctuations in delivered energy and power.
Subsequent research led by teams at City University of Hong Kong and Nanjing University of Posts and Telecommunications proposed a theoretical framework to achieve deterministic energy transfer. By utilizing the nonunique decomposition of mixed states, scientists suggested that energy could be moved from an unpredictable source into a device without transferring associated randomness. Using a proposed three-qubit system and a process described as a “cascaded collision frame,” researchers indicated that specific arrangements of entanglement could allow a collector to reach a predictable target state, potentially improving the reliability of quantum sensors and wearable technologies.
