Quitilipi mass murder investigation

Overview

Authorities in Chaco, Argentina, are investigating a suspected mass murder in the Matadero neighborhood of Quitilipi following a fatal house fire. Five people died in the incident: 22-year-old Rocío Aranda, her 4-year-old son Franco Aranda, two nephews, Adriana and Bruno Barrios, and a 6-month-old baby, Bernardo Ávalos.

Police Chief Fernando Romero described the event as one of the most atrocious crimes in the province since 1953. The primary police hypothesis suggests that 25-year-old Alberto Luis Ávalos allegedly strangled Aranda and attacked three children with a knife before setting the structure on fire. The infant reportedly died from smoke inhalation.

Ávalos was found unconscious near the property and was treated for physical injuries, signs of drug intoxication, and acute psychosis. He also reportedly attempted suicide by hanging. While the suspect remains in custody, Chaco’s Undersecretary of Gender and Diversity, Sonia Valenzuela, noted that judicial experts must determine if the individual acted with full consciousness of his actions. Valenzuela also addressed the social backlash faced by the mother of the deceased children, who had left them in the care of a friend on the night of the incident.
