Radioactive glue treatment for pancreatic cancer

Overview

Doctors at Fondazione Policlinico Gemelli in Rome have performed the first global clinical application of a specialized radioactive biological glue to treat inoperable pancreatic cancer. The procedure, which utilized YntraDose® developed by the Italian startup BetaGlue Therapeutics, involved injecting a substance containing Yttrium-90 particles directly into a 63-year-old woman’s tumor.

This minimally invasive percutaneous therapy is designed to shrink tumor mass through targeted infiltration, with the goal of making locally advanced cancers eligible for traditional surgery at a later stage. The one-hour procedure was performed under local anesthesia and minimal sedation. Initial follow-up PET-CT scans confirmed the radiopharmaceutical was correctly deposited within the pancreas without off-target uptake.

The treatment was conducted as part of an international clinical trial involving medical oncology experts. The trial includes participating institutions across Italy, Belgium, and Great Britain, with further patient administrations scheduled for October.
