Railway accidents in Poland
Overview
Two separate collisions involving trains occurred in Poland in October 2026.
In the first incident at a railway crossing in Sokolniki Suche, a truck entered the tracks despite a red light and collided with a PKP Intercity train. The collision caused the locomotive and two carriages to derail, resulting in the death of a 39-year-old female passenger and the hospitalization of eight others. Both the truck and train drivers were reported to be in serious condition. In response, Polish authorities indicated plans to expand the “Red Light” automated enforcement system by integrating PKP monitoring cameras to oversee more crossings.
In a subsequent incident in Zbydniów, a military BRDM-2M ‘Żbik’ armored vehicle collided with a freight train at an unguarded crossing. Preliminary findings suggest the driver moved forward while a train was passing. No injuries were reported, and the train did not derail. Investigations by the Military Gendarmerie and the State Commission for Railway Accident Investigation are ongoing.
