Railway crossing collisions in Bulgaria and Romania

Overview

In September 2026, a passenger train traveling from Montana to Sofia collided with a heavy truck at a railway crossing in the Kulata district of Vratsa, Bulgaria. The National Company Railway Infrastructure (NKZHI) attributed the accident to a traffic violation by the truck driver, who failed to obey functional light and sound signals. While the collision caused significant damage to the locomotive, the trailer, and railway infrastructure, no injuries were reported among the 23 passengers. The incident caused delays of up to 340 minutes for several trains.

In October 2026, a similar incident occurred near Baia Mare, Romania, on the Dej–Baia Mare route. A passenger train carrying approximately 100 people collided with a truck transporting sewage sludge at a level crossing without barriers. The impact caused the truck to overturn and spill its contents. Preliminary investigations suggest the truck driver failed to stop at the crossing. No injuries were reported among the passengers or the driver, and the train resumed its journey following a delay of several dozen minutes.
