Railway diesel theft in Nghệ An

Police in Nghệ An province dismantled a major criminal ring responsible for stealing hundreds of thousands of liters of diesel from locomotives at Vinh Station. The operation led to the arrest of 21 individuals, including the ringleader, Nguyễn Đình Kiên, a train driver for the Hanoi Locomotive Enterprise.

Between July 2025 and July 2026, the group utilized a sophisticated system of underground pipelines buried beneath railway tracks to siphon fuel during late-night hours. The stolen diesel was sold at rates 2,800 to 4,000 VND lower than standard market prices. The ring, which comprised various workers and local business owners, reportedly generated over 4.5 billion VND in illicit profits.
