Railway infrastructure developments in Serbia

Overview

The Niš–Leskovac railway section is scheduled to resume passenger service on October 9, 2026, following a reconstruction project of the 22.8-kilometer Niš–Brestovac stretch. Funded by over 44 million euros from European Union IPA funds, the modernization includes new tracks, electrical infrastructure, and eight bridges. Once operational, trains are expected to reach speeds of 120 km/h. However, the reopening follows a functional inspection report from September that identified technical deficiencies, such as unreliable switch operation at Niš station, improper track geometry, and unfinished construction work.
