Railway infrastructure theft in Spain

Overview

Spanish law enforcement agencies continue to combat theft and vandalism targeting national infrastructure. In Catalonia, Mossos d'Esquadra and ADIF have addressed widespread copper cable theft within the railway network, noting that 36 individuals have been arrested since August. These thefts have caused significant service disruptions in the Rodalies network and substantial damage to the R14 line, with repair costs estimated at approximately 14 million euros. Repairs for the damage on the R14 line are expected to continue until the end of the year.

In Guadalajara, the Guardia Civil arrested two men, aged 32 and 56, for the theft of railway material at the Baides station. Following a citizen report regarding a suspicious van near the tracks on October 3, officers recovered copper cabling valued at approximately 8,000 euros. Also seized were a cutting tool, two knives, various work tools, and license plates stolen earlier this year in Parla. This incident is part of a recurring pattern of thefts in the Baides area, which has previously included the dismantling of groups using blowtorches to cut rails and an interception of a driver on the A-2 highway in July.
