Rakuten Mobile and KDDI roaming transition
Overview
Rakuten Mobile is transitioning its network infrastructure strategy as its roaming agreement with KDDI approaches an end in September 2026. To address potential coverage gaps resulting from the reduction of KDDI roaming services, Rakuten plans to launch a direct-to-smartphone satellite communication service in collaboration with AST SpaceMobile within 2026.
While KDDI intends to scale back roaming in urban areas where Rakuten has established its own network to manage traffic loads and promote competition, Rakuten Group CEO Hiroshi Mikitani clarified that roaming will continue after October in rural or mountainous regions where self-built infrastructure remains insufficient.
