Rare conjoined twin birth in Odisha

Overview

A rare birth involving conjoined twins was reported at MKCG Medical College and Hospital in Berhampur, Odisha. The newborn, born to a mother from the Kandhamal district, presented with two heads and one body. Medical professionals initially identified the condition as potentially being craniopagus, noting the infant had a single heart and was being monitored in the Special Newborn Care Unit.

Seven days later, the male conjoined twins died following intensive care. Medical evaluations identified the condition as dicephalic parapagus, a rare state where the infants shared a single heart, liver, and genitourinary tract, as well as two spinal columns, arms, and legs. Due to the complexity of the shared vital organs and respiratory complications, doctors determined that surgical separation was impossible.
