Ravichandran Ashwin commentary on India-Sri Lanka series

Following India’s two-match Test tour of Sri Lanka in August 2026, Indian off-spinner Ravichandran Ashwin has provided commentary on both the Sri Lankan bowling attack and the batting approach of teammate Rishabh Pant.

Regarding Sri Lanka, Ashwin observed that the nation lacks a spin bowler with the commanding presence of former left-arm spinner Rangana Herath. While identifying Prabath Jayasuriya as a frontline option, Ashwin questioned if Jayasuriya’s slower pace would sufficiently challenge the Indian lineup. He suggested that the absence of a legendary spinner significantly impacts Sri Lanka’s competitiveness, stating, “If Rangana Herath was still there, I would say Sri Lanka have a great chance.”

Shifting focus to the Indian squad, Ashwin criticized Rishabh Pant’s aggressive Test cricket approach. Despite Pant scoring 168 runs during the series, including two half-centuries, Ashwin expressed disappointment that the player has not yet met the expectations of a veteran with over 50 Test appearances.

Speaking on his YouTube channel, ‘Ash Ki Baat’, Ashwin argued that Pant’s aggressive style should not serve as an excuse for high-risk decisions at critical junctures. He rejected the “once-in-a-generation” label often applied to Pant, suggesting such narratives should not overshadow the need for situational awareness. Ashwin contrasted Pant with aggressive legends like Virender Sehwag and Adam Gilchrist, noting they did not frequently lose wickets through reckless shots when the team was vulnerable. He warned against using ‘marketing lines’ to justify unorthodox styles, noting, “It takes 11 cricketers to build a Test and win it... but it takes only 1 moment of foolishness to lose a Test.”
