Rayalaseema Global Horticulture Hub development

Overview

In October 2026, Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister N. Chandrababu Naidu and Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman laid the foundation stone for the ‘Global Horticulture Hub – Rayalaseema Rising’ project and the Indian School of Agriculture in Madanapalle, Annamayya district. The Rs 1 lakh crore initiative aims to transform the drought-prone Rayalaseema region into a global fruit-producing center by expanding horticulture cultivation by 6 lakh hectares and increasing production from 222 lakh tonnes to 435 lakh tonnes.

The project is scheduled for implementation in three phases through July 2029. Funding involves Rs 40,352 crore from the Central government and a target of Rs 60,000 crore from the private sector. The development spans 10 districts and 5,869 villages. To support this, the central government is emphasizing programs such as PM-Kisan Samman Nidhi, Kisan Credit Cards, PM Fasal Bima Yojana, and the PM-KUSUM scheme for solar irrigation, alongside multilateral support from the World Bank and Asian Development Bank.

The foundation ceremony, attended by Reliance Industries’ executive director Anant Ambani, faced disruptions from local protesters. Farmers and youth expressed concerns regarding unemployment and demanded local job opportunities. Additionally, YSRCP leader YS Jagan Mohan Reddy criticized the project, describing the investment claims as ‘theatrics’ and alleging a lack of actual budget allocation.
