Real Madrid and Barcelona legal dispute
Overview
A legal dispute has emerged between Real Madrid and FC Barcelona following comments made by Real Madrid President Florentino Pérez regarding the Negreira affair. Pérez accused Barcelona of “systemic corruption” and claimed Real Madrid had been “robbed” of seven league titles due to refereeing favoritism.
In response, a Madrid court has summoned Pérez and Barcelona representatives to a mandatory conciliation hearing on November 25 at 09:40 in courtrooms 1 and 2. This proceeding is a required step under Article 205 of Spain’s Criminal Code before Barcelona can file a formal criminal defamation lawsuit. Barcelona seeks a public retraction, describing the statements as “knowingly false, defamatory and damaging to the club’s image and reputation.” If the hearing fails or Pérez refuses to retract the comments, Barcelona intends to proceed with criminal charges.
Barcelona President Joan Laporta has since intensified the rhetoric, stating the relationship between the two clubs is “nonexistent.” Speaking at the 33rd General Assembly of the European Football Clubs (EFC) in Copenhagen, Laporta accused Real Madrid of using the Negreira case to promote a “predetermined narrative” and criticized the club for public attacks, asserting that Barcelona will defend its honor. While maintaining this stance against Real Madrid, Laporta noted he has “smoothed over differences” and restored his relationship with Atlético de Madrid CEO Miguel Ángel Gil Marín, signaling a potential end to previous disputes regarding transfer market interests.
