Recycled plastic modular housing initiatives

Overview

Developments in sustainable construction involve using interlocking recycled plastic blocks to build modular homes rapidly and affordably.

In Colombia, the company Conceptos Plásticos has implemented a method using recycled plastic blocks that can assemble a family home in five days. These materials are approximately 40 percent cheaper than traditional options and are being used for residential housing, schools, and temporary shelters, including projects by UNICEF in Ivory Coast.

In Brazil, a pilot project in Carapicuíba, São Paulo, led by the social organization TETO Brasil, successfully installed a 27-square-meter home using interlocking blocks developed by Fuplastic. This specific unit was assembled in 15 hours using approximately two tons of recycled plastic. The project incorporates additional sustainable features, such as solar panels, rainwater collection, and a wastewater treatment system, with a long-term goal of constructing 1,000 such homes.
